Guard Warns Of Security Gaps At Airport

As security bosses bid to meet targets and avoid colossal penalty fines, security guards say standards at Gatwick Airport are slipping.
Travellers are being rushed through security checks to cut delays - putting the lives of them and their fellow passengers at risk.
advertisementGuards are said to miss knives and guns with alarming frequency. In some cases they are unable to find offending items despite being tipped off they are being carried.
The shocking revelations about the UK's second busiest airport were made by a security guard from Sussex who works at Gatwick.
Confidential documents which The Argus has seen reveal travellers must pass through security checks every 16 seconds in order for BAA to avoid financial penalties of hundreds of thousands of pounds. Security experts recommend an average search time of between 15 and 30 seconds.
A spokesman for BAA, which runs Gatwick airport, said the company was dedicated to increasing the safety and security of passengers.
